SERVICE ACTIVITIES

About 2% of faculty in the United States identify as Latina. I understand that by being in that demographic, my presence and my voice are important and needed, and automatically I serve as an unofficial role model and mentor to many underrepresented students entering the pipeline.

It has been shown that when people have mentors that look like themselves, they are more likely to succeed, therefore I strive to be an active mentor for Latinxs and women in my department, university, and community. This is why I volunteer in local and national community-based and professional organizations.

Graduate and undergraduate students are the primary pool for the next generation of faculty and STEM professionals, so I focus on efforts to attract and support students from underrepresented backgrounds to conduct research and enter science careers.
